What to Wear & What to Expect

To help you feel comfortable and prepared for your stay at Ujima Lodge, we’ve put together a few seasonal recommendations and packing tips for time spent in the bush.

October – April | Summer & Green Season

These months are typically warm to hot during the day, with cooler mornings and evenings. We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime, along with a warm layer or light jacket for early morning and sunset safaris.

This is also the time of year when the bush is at its greenest and most vibrant. Short afternoon thunderstorms can occasionally occur, usually clearing quickly and leaving behind dramatic skies and beautiful fresh air. It is also a wonderful season for birdlife and newborn animals.

May – September | Winter Safari Season

Winter in the Greater Kruger brings beautifully mild sunny days and crisp, often very cold mornings and evenings, especially during safari drives.

We recommend casual layered clothing for daytime and a very warm jacket, scarf and comfortable closed shoes for morning and evening safaris. Blankets and ponchos are always available on the vehicles for your comfort.

The Best Time for Safari

The Greater Kruger is truly a year-round safari destination, with every season offering something unique.

Traditionally, the drier winter months from May to October are considered exceptional for game viewing, as thinner vegetation and reduced water availability make wildlife easier to spot around rivers and waterholes.

During the greener summer months, the landscape transforms completely — lush vegetation, dramatic skies, migratory birds and newborn wildlife make this an incredibly special and beautiful time to visit.

At Ujima, we traverse within private sections of the Greater Kruger, allowing for a quieter and more intimate safari experience with limited vehicle numbers and expert local guides.

What to Bring

We recommend packing:
• Comfortable lightweight clothing in neutral or earthy tones for safari activities
• A warm jacket or fleece for early mornings and evenings
• Comfortable walking shoes or trainers
• Sandals or relaxed footwear for around the lodge
• Swimwear for the pool
• Sunglasses, sunhat and sunscreen
• Camera equipment, binoculars and spare charging equipment
• Any personal medication and essentials you may require during your stay

Formal wear is not required at Ujima – the atmosphere is relaxed, elegant and comfortably informal.

Mosquito repellent is provided in all rooms, however you are very welcome to bring your preferred brand should you wish.

Luggage Information

For guests travelling on smaller domestic or charter aircraft within Southern Africa, soft-sided luggage is strongly recommended due to baggage restrictions often applied by regional airlines.

Additional Notes

While Ujima Lodge offers a wonderfully immersive bush experience, we are fortunate to still have access to nearby amenities within a short driving distance should anything be needed during your stay.

We do however recommend guests travel with sufficient personal medication, prescription items and any essentials they may specifically require for comfort during their time with us. Should anything unexpected arise, our team is always very happy to assist in arranging access to nearby pharmacies or essential supplies where possible.

In the event of rain during safari activities, waterproof ponchos are provided for guest comfort.

Drones are not permitted within the reserve or surrounding wildlife areas.

Health & Travel Information

Medical Facilities

While Ujima offers a wonderfully immersive bush experience, guests can feel reassured that Hoedspruit has access to excellent medical facilities nearby, including the private Busamed Modjadji Private Hospital, as well as local clinics and pharmacies within easy reach should assistance ever be required during your stay.

Our team is always available to assist guests should any medical support, pharmacy visits or additional arrangements be needed whilst at the lodge.

Malaria Information

Ujima Lodge is located within the Greater Kruger region near Hoedspruit, which is considered a low-risk malaria area, particularly during the cooler winter months from May to August. Risk levels are generally highest during the warmer summer and rainy months between September and April.

Many guests travelling to the region choose simply to take sensible precautions such as using insect repellent, wearing light long sleeves during evenings and keeping room screens closed where possible. Mosquito repellent is provided in all guest rooms.

However, as requirements and personal circumstances vary, we always strongly recommend guests consult their GP, travel clinic or healthcare provider prior to travel regarding the most up-to-date medical advice and whether anti-malaria medication is appropriate for them personally.

Please note that recommendations and risk levels can change from time to time. Whilst we endeavour to keep our information as accurate as possible, Ujima Lodge cannot be held responsible for outdated medical guidance and guests should always seek professional medical advice before travelling.

Travel Insurance

Whilst we of course hope your time with us at Ujima will be nothing short of seamless and unforgettable, we always strongly recommend guests take out comprehensive travel insurance prior to travelling for complete peace of mind.

Insurance should ideally cover medical expenses, cancellation, delays, personal belongings and any safari or travel-related activities during your stay.

In the unlikely event of disruption or cancellation, our team will always do everything possible to assist guests with any supporting documentation required for insurance purposes.

Passport Requirements

All international travellers require a passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival, with a minimum of 2 blank visa pages available for entry into South Africa.

Guests are advised to check visa requirements relevant to their nationality prior to travel.
